Homemade pizza sauce

This pizza sauce is incredibly flavorful and super easy to make! Why buy pizza sauce from the store, when you can make it at home, so much healthier, but also tastier?

You can make larger batches and put them in a jar ahead of time, if you want late night pizza when you don’t feel like cooking. It lasts between 5 and 7 days in the refrigerator, but you can also store it in the freezer, where it lasts 6-8 months.

Rich in spices and garlic, this pizza sauce should be on your “must try” list. Here’s how to prepare it!

Pizza sauce recipe: ingredients, preparation


  • can of tomato sauce 420 grams
  • 170 grams of tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (you can substitute rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil or other vegetable oil)
  • 1 onion
  • 4-5 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon aromatic herb mix (oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme)
  • some chili flakes (optional, only if you want spicy pizza sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (can substitute honey or agave nectar – this sweet ingredient is mandatory, to reduce the acidity of the tomatoes)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Preparation method:

Wash the onion and garlic and chop finely. Put the oil in a skillet, over medium to high heat, then add the onions and a pinch of salt and sauté for 4-5 minutes, until softened and slightly changing color.

Add the minced garlic over the crushed shallots, mix and leave on the heat for 30 seconds. Add the rest of the ingredients, mix and leave on the heat for 10-15 minutes or until the sauce reaches the desired consistency.

Pour the tomato sauce into sterilized jars. Let it come to room temperature before putting it in the fridge.
